The Science of CoolSculpting: How it Affects Fat Cells
Written By Kiana Cauley
Developed by Harvard scientists as a non-invasive, next-generation fat reduction treatment, CoolSculpting® is an FDA-approved, scalpel-free alternative to liposuction and through its revolutionary use of freezing technology offers a safer, more comfortable treatment approach than heat-based body contouring procedures.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive procedure that uses controlled cooling to target and eliminate fat cells in specific areas of the body. The science behind CoolSculpting®, cryolipolysis, works by freezing fat cells, which causes them to die. These dead fat cells are then gradually eliminated from the body through the lymphatic system.

The CoolSculpting® procedure triggers apoptosis, a natural process of cell death, in fat cells. During the procedure, the fat cells in the treatment area are exposed to controlled cooling, which causes the cells to crystalize. This crystallization causes the cell membrane to rupture, leading to the death of the fat cell.

Once the fat cell is dead, it is gradually eliminated from the body through the lymphatic system. This process is called lipolysis, and it occurs over the course of several weeks to months following the CoolSculpting® treatment.

One of the major benefits of CoolSculpting® is that it is a permanent fat reduction method. Because the adult body does not produce new fat cells, once the fat cells are crystallized they are gone forever, leaving behind a slimmer and sculpted you.
