Post-Op Recovery: The Benefits of Supplements

The attached photo is a look at the assortment of supplements I have been taking as part of my pre- and post-surgical regimen.  At first glance it may seem excessive, but when we are talking about repairing and regenerating tissue, whether its post-surgery, post-injury, or post-illness, the goal should be to get it right the first time.

During healing, our body will look first to the blood as a fuel source of the nutrients it needs.  If the blood is depleted, our bodies will tap organs like the liver, the muscles, and the bones.  This is why sick people look like they are literally “wasting away.”  Muscle-wasting and bone-thinning are the end results of a body in a state of emergency.

Nutrition literally feeds the blood, providing a rich reserve for the body to tap. Proper eating and good nutrition are the foundation of nutrition, but a well-designed supplement program will significantly assist in the process.

Here’s a rundown of all the helpful supplements I’ve been using and you may want to try for your own balance.

I5 — I5 is an all-natural, fructose-free protein shake that promotes overall gastrointestinal health while promoting detoxification. I5 provides a high quality source of nutrition while improving the body’s absorption rate in the gut. This is a critical step.  Malnutrition is often the result of poor absorption.  Additionally, I5 promotes the removal of toxins.  During the recovery phase of any injury or illness, breaking down and eliminating debris and toxins is necessary for efficient healing.

QUADRACARN — Quardracarn is a high-quality, high-dosage form of L-Carnitine.  L-Carnitine is the body’s most potent fat-burning protein.  Your adrenals use it to break down cholesterol (so its good for high cholesterol patients) and turn it into hormones, in particular testosterone and IGF (growth factor) for guys.  So it’s really an adrenal and testosterone booster for guys.

COLLAGEN HYDROLYSATE — Hydrolyzed Collagen is a combination of amino acids in concentrations that promote rapid reproduction of blood cells for healing and conditioning for bone and joint health.  The use of collagen has been controversial, since the molecule is often times too large for quick absorption in the body.  This collagen is hydrolyzed, reducing the size and weight of the molecule, resulting in quick assimilation and improved hydration to the connective tissue.  Additionally, collagen has been considered an anti-aging product as it prevents age-related cartilage damage and collagen loss.

BIO-C — Bio-C s a co-factor for collagen.  Vitamin C is essential for collagen repair, labral tears, ligament repair and connective tissue healing.   Vitamin C is also important for supporting the autoimmune system and is a strong antioxidant. The latest research also shows that Vitamin C is a strong neurotransmitter necessary for brain health. People low in Vitamin C are slow healers.

HEALTHY OILS — Healthy Oils is the name of our fish oil supplement.  Rich in EPA and DHA, which are long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids, fish oils have shown to be highly beneficial in heart, brain and vascular health. For my purposes, I add them for their joint health properties and their anti-inflammatory benefits.  EPA is most effective at reducing cellular inflammation, while DHA reduces the effects of what inflammation is produced. Cellular inflammation is a major culprit in increasing healing time and reducing recovery rates. Combating the inflammatory response will radically improve the rate of recovery.

There are several forms of Omega 3s, but most EPA and DHA come from animal sources like cold-water fish.

MEN’S PERFORMANCE MULTIVITAMIN — The biggest challenge convalescing people have is malnutrition.  This can happen at the macro-nutrient level (which is supplemented with the I-5 shakes) or at the micro-nutrient level (vitamins and minerals).  Our Men’s Performance Multivitamin over-delivers on the micro-nutrients.  The important thing to remember with any vitamin is whether the supplement is designed with the proper ratios.  Most vitamins don’t work in a 1:1 ratio, but our Men’s Performance product combines vitamins in the proper ratio for maximum absorption in the gut.

The men’s performance-pack also included added antioxidants and an additional Omega 3 soft gel, the formula found in the Healthy Oils.

It may seem as if I’m going a bit over the top with all of these supplements.  But when your body is trying to recover from surgery, injury or chronic disease, it looks to the body’s own resources of macro- and micro-nutrition to restore and repair the damaged areas.  Lack of the necessary “stuff” severely limits recovery and healing.  By giving your body the supplements it needs to restore and recover, healing times are reduced and a more successful recovery is achieved.
