Message from Dr. Booker: Coolness Plan, Heat & The Outdoors . . . and Increased Stimulation of Vitamin D
Summertime is in full swing and I hope you have your "Coolness Plan" in effect. By coolness I mean your summertime strategy to dealing with this oppressive heat. I recently heard a staggering figure, this June has been the hottest June in recorded history; 2010 has been the hottest year in recorded history and the last decade was the hottest decade in recorded history. In short, its getting hotter so be please take time to break from the heat and cool off. Pay special attention if you have younger children or senior members of your family staying with you as they are even more susceptible to this dangerous heat.
But enough with the happy talk.
Yes I know it is hot, but summertime should be all about getting outside. I recommend grabbing a the local paper, City Paper is my choice in DC, thumb through and take advantage of the multitude of cheap to free outdoor activities.
From a health standpoint, getting regular sunlight provides several benefits, perhaps none more important that the increased stimulation of Vitamin D. You may think of Vitamin D as just being good for strong bones, but the latest research is showing that Vitamin D is far more essential. Here are just a few of the benefits of Vitamin D:
— Maintains calcium balance: critical for normal functioning of the nervous system and bone development
— Essential for wound healing
— Controls the proliferation of mutated cells ie: reduces the growth of cancer cells
— Boosts immunity
— Decreases the risk of high blood pressure
Have a great summer, get some good sunlight (no more than 20 minutes at a time if possible) and do your body good.
Yours in Health,
Dr. Booker
